Biopsychology(excitatory and inhibitory neurotransmitters) Flashcards
1
Q
What is a neurotransmitter?
A
Chemical messengers that carry across the synaptic gap. Can be classed as excitatory or inhibitory in their action.
2
Q
Excitatory neurotransmitter -
A
acetylcholine and noradrenaline act as on switches in the nervous system. Increase likelihood that an excitatory signal is sent to the post synaptic neuron, making them more likely to fire.
3
Q
Inhibitory neurotransmitters -
A
serotonin and GABA, act as the nervous systems off switch. Decreasing the likelihood of a neuron firing, generally responsible for calming the mind and body. Filter out any excitatory neurotransmitters.
