Issue and debates(ethical implications of research and theory) Flashcards
Socially sensitive research -
Any research that might have a direct impact on social consequences for the participants in the research or a group they present.
Research process Sieber and Stanley -
Identified 4 aspects in research process at which ethical issues with social consequences may occur:
- Research question -asking a research question may be damaging to members of a particular group or sexual orientation, shows prejudice. (Is there differences in IQ between different races?)
Conduct of research - Confidentiality of the research collected (if the participant confesses to a crime should they maintain confidentiality to prevent public harm?)
Sieber and Stanley ethical issues -
Sieber and Stanley also identified 10 types of ethical issues related to socially sensitive research -
Privacy of person - during the research the individual may give more information to the research than they would like to give, may lead to an invasion of peoples private lives.
Informed consent - The participant may not always understand what is involved in the study so may lead to doubt of what they may have to do.
Wider impacts of the research -
Social consequences to participation in research, but with socially sensitive research there is potential for an indirect impact of the participants family, social group as they may also represent these people therefore it may not be justified just to safeguard the individual in the research but also the larger group of who they may represent.
