Social Facilitation Flashcards
What is social facilitation?
When arousal stimulated by the presence of an audience has a positive effect on performance
What is social inhibition?
When arousal stimulated by the presence of an audience has a negative effect on performance
How does personality effect social facilitation/inhibition?
Introverts - sensitive RAS - can become over aroused easily - social inhibition
Extroverts - don’t become over aroused easily - audience more likely for social facilitation
How do the stages of learning effect social facilitation/inhibition?
Arousal increases so does performance of dominant response
Beginners - incorrect - social inhibition
Experts - well grooved responses - raises arousal - social facilitation
This is drive theory of social facilitation
How does skill (simple/complex) types effect social facilitation/inhibition?
Audience adds to info to be processed by performer
Simple - don’t require much info processing - no audience overload - social facilitation
Complex - audience overload - social inhibition
This is known as distraction conflict
How does skill (gross/fine) types effect social facilitation/inhibition?
Gross - don’t need high levels of precision - increased arousal - social facilitation
Fine - high levels of precision - more difficult with high arousal - social inhibition
What is evaluation apprehension?
Theory proposed by Cottrell 1968
Suggests that an audience inhibits performance if the performer perceives that the audience is judging them
What are some strategies to minimise social inhibition?
Mental rehearsal Positive self talk Practice to overlearn skills Cue utilisation Positive reinforcement Internal factors Self efficacy - verbal persuasion Practice with an audience Practice selective attention
