Define goal setting
A focus for achievement
The target that an individual is trying to accomplish
What are advantages of using goal setting to performers?
More effective attentional focus - directions less likely
Increased persistence on tasks - max effort to reach goals
Setting goals increases confidence/self efficacy - effort to achieve success
Contol of arousal/anxiety - believes success is likely with sustained effort, reduces worry, inverted U theory etc.

Used when goal setting to ensure that they are effective and lead to to benefits

Smart Measurable Achievable Recorded Time phased

Goal must relate to task and individual
What is measurable in the principle?
Progess should be assessed using a direct comparison to a standard
What is achievable in the principle?
Goals challenging but attainable with sustained effort - has to be optimally challenging
What is realistic in the principle?
Goal and achievement/progress towards it should be written down
What is time phased in the principle?
Goals should have a specific deadline - short/medium/long term
