Confidence and Self Efficacy Flashcards
What is sports confidence?
General disposition which is stable and global
How someone feels about their abilities
What is self efficacy?
A specific type of self confidence that is unstable
How sure someone is of their competence in a task specific skill
What behaviour do people with high self efficacy tend to approach?
Approach behaviour
What behaviour do people with low self efficacy tend to approach?
Avoidance behaviour
What are the positive impacts of a high sports confidence?
Increased quality of performance, success, participation and persistence
Increased participation from expectation of success-motivation
Increased self esteem from experiencing success
What is Vealey’s model of sports confidence?
The level of confidence a performer feels as they approach a sports performance
The effects of their evaluation of the outcome on future performance
What are the 5 terms in Vealey’s model?
Trait sports confidence Competitive orientation Objective sports situation State sports confidence Subjective perceptions of outcome
Define trait sports confidence
An individuals innate, natural belief in their general sporting ability
Define competitive orientation
How prepared an individual is to compete, and types of goal that they have set
(Performance or product/outcome)
Define objective sports situation
The nature of the task that is to be performed
Define state sports confidence
An individuals (unstable and unchangeable) belief in their ability to be successful at a particular time
Define subjective perceptions of outcome
The extent to which a performer believes that their performance was successful
What is the performers state sports confidence dependent on when a performer approaches a sports performance?
Their pre-existing level of trait sports confidence
The nature of their task (objective sport situation)
Their competitive orientation
What is Bandura’s theory of self efficacy?
Suggests that a performer’s level of self efficacy (task specific confidence) depends on 4 factors
What are the 4 factors of Bandura’s theory of self efficacy?
Performance accomplishments
Vicarious experiences
Verbal persuasion
Emotional arousal
Define performance accomplishments
Previous successes that a performer has had
If a performer is reminded of previous mastery of tasks, self efficacy increases
Define vicarious experiences
Watching others of equal ability succeeding at the task
If a performer is shown an accurate demo, self efficacy increases
Define verbal persuasion
Being convinced that they have the ability to be successful at the task
Positive talk from the coach increases self efficacy. Experienced performers can use positive self talk, to persuade themselves
Define emotional arousal
The performer’s perception of their physiological and psychological state
If a performer can view their heightened arousal as readiness for performance, efficacy will increase
