Sagittal plane
The Sagittal plane divides the body in a left side and a right side - flexion and extension
An sporting example would be a somersault
Frontal plane
The Frontal plane divides the body from top to bottom (vertically), but front and back sections - adduction and abduction
A sporting example is a cartwheel
Transverse plane
The Transverse plane divides the body across the middle (horizontally), giving a top section (also known as ‘superior’) and a bottom section (‘inferior) - rotation
A sporting example would be a trampoline twist, discus throwing.
Frontal axis
Divides the body into left and right intersecting the hip (sagittal plane)
Sagittal axis
Divides the body into front and back intersecting the head (frontal plane)
Vertical axis
Divides the body into top and bottom, intersecting the stomach (transverse plane)
