Soc 20 Levers Flashcards
What is a lever?
Refers to s system os muscles and bones to work together to bring about movement
What are the 4 components of levers
1) a fulcrum - the point around which the lever rotates.
” “
2) a load - the force that is applied by the lever system. The load is the object you want to move a dumb bell with your arm.
” “
Aan edfort- a force that is applied by the user of the leversystem. The effort is supplied by your muscles .
” “
lever arm- a rigid bar auch as a bone
Different class od levers
First class Sexond class Third class
FLE
First class lever- fulcrum is in the middle Sexond class lever- load is in the middle Third class lever- effort is in the middle
Example pf first class
Tricep dip- elbow is the fulcrumwhich sits between the load and the effort applied by the tricep
Example of second class
Calf raise- the load sits between the toes and the ball of the feet (fulcrum) and the gastrocnemius muscles apply the effort by pulling the heel
Third class lever example
Bicep curl- you arre using a third class lever as the effort is applied by the bicep muscle which is between the fulcrum at the elbow joint and the weight in your hand
Mechanical advantage
When the output of the lever is greater than the input
When the load is greater than the effort so you are getting more out than ypu are putting in
Divide input by output
First and second levers work at a mechanical advantage
Mechanical disadvantage
When the effort and the load are boththe same side of the fulcrum but the effprt sits closer to the fulcrum than the load.
The force you apply os greater than the load so you are putting in more than you are getting out
Third class levers work at a mechanical disadvantage
