What are performance enhancing drugs
A substance that can be taken in a variety of ways to produce expected and welcome physicaland/or physiological effects
Can increase the level of performance but can also cause side effects that are unpleasant
Anabolic steroids
Drugs that mimic the make sex gormone testosterone and promote bone and muscle growth
Side effects: increased risks of muscle injury, increased risk of heart attacks and strokes, high blood pressure snd even death
Beta blockers
Drugs that are used to conteol the heart rate and have a calming and relaxing effect.
Can help target sports where steadiness and precision is required (archery)
Side effects: nausea, diarrohea, tiredness, depression, insomnia and nightmares
Narcotics
Drugs that affect the mood or behaviour, including drowsiness and relieving pain
Benefits: act by depressing the central nervous system and give relief from painful injuries, but allowing the injured player to take part, they can increase the risk of severe or long lasting injury
Side effects: loss of coordination, loss pf balance, loss of concentration and emotional effects
Analgesics
Drugs that elevate the rate of urine production
