Soc 16 Flashcards
What is the 3 main functions of the cardiovascular system
.to clot the blood
.to transport nutrients and waste product around the body
.control the body temperature by vasodilation and vasoconstriction
What is vascular shunting
Process that increases blood flow to active areas during exercise
Diverting blood away from inactive areas;achieved by vasodilation and vasocknstruction
What does cardiovascular stand for
The cardiovascular system is formed by our heart and blood vessels. Cardio means the heart and vascualr mean blood vessels
Vasodilation
When veins swell up or dilate; widening of the internal diameter(lumen) of the blood vessel to allow increased blood flow
Vasoconstriction
When veins shrink down; narrowing of the internal diameter (lumen) of the blood vessel to decrease blood flow
Cardio-respiratory system
The interaction or rhe heart lungs to supply oxygen to muscles during exercise
Cardiovascualr
To do with the heart, blood and blood vessels together
Arteries
. Arteries take oxygenated blood away from the heart
. Arteries have thick walls and are made more elastic than veins as they carry blood which is at a higher pressure than veins as they carry oxygenated blood
Veins
.veins carry blood into the heart
. Veins have much thinner walls, are less elastic and carry blood at a lower pressure
. Veins contain many valves which helps deoxygenated blood flow to the heart
. The pulmary vein is different to other veins as it carries oxygenated blood from the lungs back to the heart
Capillaries
.capillaries are microscopic vessels they are just one cell thick
. At one end capillaries carry oxygenated blood which transfersnoxygen and nutrients to the musckes
. At the other end, they carry deoxygenated blood imto the veins picking up waste products and carrying them around the body to dispose of them
. Capillaries are where gaesous exchange takes place
Blood pressure
. Blood pressure is a measure of the force that your heart uses to pump the blood around your body
. High blood pressure can indicate a higher risk of heart problems
What is theninportance of red blood cells
.red blood cells transport oxygen from the lungs to the bodys cells, and carbon dioxide from the cells to the lungs
What is the importance of white blood cells
. The blood also contains transparent ceols called white blood cells
. They have an important function as the defense system of the body
. They produce antibodies to fight against infections and diseases
. If an athlete has a disease or an infection they may not be able to train/preform
What is the importance of platelets
. Blood platelets are formed in the bone marrow
. Tiny fragments that clump together to help blood clot and stop bleeding
. Blood is first line of defense in the repair wound
.when blood vessel is cut, platelets rush to the area and swell into irregular shales, they become sticky and act as a plug
What is the importance of plasma
. The main role of plasma is to take nutrients, hormones and proteins to the parts of the body that needs it
. Cells also put their waste products into the plasma . Tuenplasma then helps rmeove this waste frim the body
