sexually transmitted infection
STD
disease from STI that disrupts bodily function
Chlamydia transmission
Spread through vaginal, anal, or oral sex. Semen does not have to be present in order to spread
Chlamydia symptoms
asymptomatic in 75% of females and 50% of males
itching or pain
burning with urination
discharge
Chlamydia recurrence
can be eliminated with oral doxycycline
should be tested again 3 months after treatment
Chlamydia complications
males:
* prostatitis
* epididymis (sterility) uncommon
females:
*PID -> infertility & ectopic (outside of normal place) pregnancies
* cervicitis
can be passed to baby after birth -> eye infections, pneumonia
Genital warts transmission
caused by HPV (bi-product)
Genital warts symptoms
warts on or around genitals
may lie dormant for years (still contagious)
genital warts recurrence
1st outbreak: 6 weeks to 8 months (av: 3 months)
20% goes away spontaneously
60% goes away after visit to doctor
genital warts treatments
1) chemicals
2) freezing
3) electrocautery
4) laser surgery
genital warts complications
more of a nuisance
1/3 of genital warts are precancerous in females
HPV transmission
spread through sexual contact (oral, anal, vaginal)
goes through skin and spreads via bursting of skin cells (i.e warts)
HPV symptoms
none; sometimes genital warts
HPV treatments
vaccine; gardisil 9 (works best before sexually active)
goes away on its own; if no warts found 6 months after last inspection: no disease
HPV complications
anal cancer, various vaginal cancers, throat cancer
Genital Herpes transmission
herpes 1: kissing, oral sex
herpes 2: genital contact, oral and anal
to avoid spread via birth -> c section
Herpes symptoms
cold sores, fever, swollen lymph nodes
Herpes recurrence
6 outbreaks in first year, 3 outbreaks by 5th year
Herpes treatment
no cure, drugs may help with outbreaks
outbreaks triggered by
sunburn
stress
certain foods
Herpes complications
can be fatal to infant
can be present in eyes
painful outbreaks
Hepatitis B transmission
sexual contact (anal, vaginal, oral)
sharing needles
Hep B symptoms
jaundice, fever, swelling of liver
Hep B treatment
vaccine (3 shots), oral antivirals
Hep B complications
infection of liver, can lead to liver cancer, liver failure
Hepatitis A transmission
spread through feces, oral (anal), restaurant, etc.
Hep A symptoms
fever, jaundice, (similar to Hep B but milder)
Hep A treatment
2 vaccine shots to prevent, no specific treatment
Hep A complications
never gets to a chronic level, no bad complications
HIV/AIDs transmission
sexually transmitted (especially anal sex but oral and vaginal too)
contaminated blood, sharing needles
mother to fetus & via breastfeeding
HIV/AIDS symptoms
flu like symptoms, infection, very often asymptomatic
HIV/AIDS treatment
not curable
PEP (post exposure prophylaxis)
Pre-exposure prophylaxis
take pills to decrease chance of HIV infection by 80%
AIDS complications
if untreated, most people die via failed immune system (because of infections) before the 1st year
Gonorrhea transmission
sexual contact
babies can be infected from birth
Gonorrhea symptoms
males:
most have symptoms
thick discharge / pus from urethra
burning during urination
females:
yellow/bloody discharge
bleeding during sex
burning during urination
Gonorrhea treatment
oral antibiotics
Gonorrhea complications
may cause PID (pelvic inflammatory disease) in females
epididymitis (swollen testicles)
