1) biological factors - runs in the family
2) learning processes - pavlovian/classical conditioning
3) courtship disorders - paraphilia seen as a disorder of normal courtship behavior
4) may represent sexual escape - paraphiliacs due to blockage of normal sexual expression
5) Cycle of abuse
6) influence of other traits - hypersexuality, OCD, ADHD, etc.

*79% of date rapists are frustrated with sex life because they want more
- on average have sex 1.5 x a week compared to normal 0.8 x per week
cold-to-hot empathy gap
as people get more sexually aroused, they pay more attention to their sexual desires and ignore moral issues more
Why does rape occur?
1) evolutionary roots - human capacity for rape is an adaptation for reproduction
2) social forces - rape is a learned behavior (US society is a rape prone culture due to patriarchal ideology
3) may be motivated by the hatred of women or desire to control them (why more rapes occur to double minorities) ??
Partner Violence cycle
1) tension building phase: threatening and/or minor assaults
2) violence phase: actual violent behavior occurs
3) reconciliation phase: perpetrator is apologetic and is forgiven
3 kinds of stalking
1) intimate partner stalking: victim is stalked by current or former spouse, partner, date, etc.
2) delusional stalking - stalker believes victim is in love with them or could be easily made to fall in love with them
3) grudge stalking - nonsexual revenge stalking
