Soc 10 Flashcards
What are the 8 different types of injury
Sprain,strain,torn cartilage,concussion,abraision,fractures,dislocation,soft tissue injury
Soft tissue injury (joint injuries)
Joints are where two or more bones meet. They can be torn or overstretched tendons, ligaments, muscles and cartilage.
Sprains
A sprain is a damaged ligament. Twisting or overstretching the ligament. Often occurs by stretching too far past the normal range of movement SYMPTOMS-SWELLING
Strains (muscles)
A strain is a twist, tear or overstretched muscle or a tendon. Two examples are golfers elbow and tennis elbow. Tendons are inflamed due to overuse, causing pain on the outside of the elbow
Torn catilage
Cartiglage is a firm elastic substance which lines adjoining bones. Damage to cartilage often occurs due to wear and tear from long term overuse. They are tears at the join
Compound fractures
The broken bone protrudes through the skin
In closed fractures
The skin over break is not damaged
Simple fractures
Takes place with no displacement of the bone
Stress fracture
Overuse injury
Fractures
Broken or cracked bones
Concussion
Bang to the head
Dislocation
Bone forced out of location
Abrasion
Graze caused by friction
How can a soft tissue injury occur
Overstretching
How can a sprain occure
Stretched past normal range
How can a strain occur
Twist tear or overstretched muscle
How can a torn cartilage occur
Long term overuse
How can a fracture occur
Overuse injuries because of fatigue
How can dislocation occur
Hard blow
How can a abrasion occur
Tackle or just simply falling
How can a concussion occur
Blow to the head
What are the 5 ways to prevent injury
Use of protective equptment, checking of equiptment, correct application of the principles of training, correct application and adherance of rules, warm up and cool down
What does rice stand for
Rest,ice,compression and elevation
