Smoking Cessation Drugs Flashcards
Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT)
Action
Nicotine, naturally occurring alkaloid, binds stereo-selectively to nicotinic cholinergic receptors at the autonomic ganglia, in the adrenal medulla, at neuromuscular junctions, and in the brain
Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT)
Use
Treatment to aid smoking cessation for the relief of nicotine withdrawal S/S
Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT)
Examples
Transdermal Patch
Gum - chew and place between buccal cheek and gum, when craving returns, chew 5-8 times and place in different location between buccal cheek and gum
Antidepressant
Action
Belived to act by enhancing CNS noradrenergic and dopaminergic release
Antidepressant
Use
Generally not as effective as NRT. Bupropion is safe for use among smokers with stable Cardiovascular Disease and COPD
Antidepressant
Adverse Effects
Insomnia
Agitation
dry mouth
headache
Antidepressant
Contraindications
Seizure Disorder
Antidepressant
Examples
Bupropion - Wellbutrin
Partial Nicotine Agonist
Action
Reduces the S/S of Nicotine withdrawal by binding with high affinity and acting as a partial agonist at the alpha-4 beta-2 nicotinic receptors.
Partial Nicotine Agonist
Use
Most effective in producing six month tobacco cessation.
*Safe in pt w/ COPD
Partial Nicotine Agonist
Adverse Effects
Nausea
disordered sleep - insomnia, abnormal dreams (vivid, unusual, strange)
Partial Nicotine Agonist
Contraindications
May cause CNS Depression - pt should not perform tasks that require mental alertness (operate heavy machinery, drive, create flashcards)
Partial Nicotine Agonist
Example
Varenicline - Chantix
