Antidiabetics PG 899 Flashcards
This class if antidiabetics acts by stimulating peripheral glucose uptake and stimulates the synthesis of glycogen by the liver. It promotes protein synthesis and helps the body store fat by preventing its breakdown for energy:
Insulin
This antidiabetics use is necessary for controlling type 1 diabetes that is caused by a marked decrease in the amount of insulin produced by the pancreas. Can be used for type 2 as well.
insulin
the adverse reaction of this antidiabetic can cause hypoglycemia
Insulin
contraindications of insulin use
allergy to animals.
when taking with oral hypoglycemia agents may result in hypoglycemia.
a
considerations/things that could also cause hypoglycemia with insulin use:
Pt eats too little food
Dose is incorrectly measured
PT drastically increases physical activity
Infection may change dose requirements
patient education of insulin use
requirements may change based on stress/illness
given parenterally, usually SQ
Injection site must be rotated.
this subclass of oral antidiabetics lowers blood glucose by stimulating beta cells of pancreas to make more insulin.
sulfonylureas
this subclass of oral anti diabetics reduces hepatic glucose production and increases insulin sensitivity in muscle and fat cell
Biguanides
This subclass of oral antidiabetics lowers blood sugar by delaying digestion of carbs and absorption
glucosidase inhibitors
this subclass of oral anti diabetics stimulates release of insulin
meglitinides
this subclass of oral antidiabetics decrease insulin resistance and increase insulin sensitivity
Thiazolidinedione
This class of antidiabetics is used to treat patients with Type 2 diabetes not controlled with diet and exercise
Oral Antidiabetics
Adverse reactions to Oral Antidiabetics
Varies greatly
GI upset
Hypoglycemia
This subclass of oral antidiabetics may result in lactic acidosis, especially in patients with renal impairment.
Biguanides (metformin)
this subclass of oral antidiabetics can cause or exacerbate CHF in some patients
Thiazolidinediones
