Bronchodilators PG 874 Flashcards
Beta2 Agonists Action
Stimulate the bronchial smooth muscle to dilate relaxing the brochioles. the stimulants and reuptake inhibitors increase levels of endogenous catecholamine.
what are Beta2 agonists used for
reversible airway obstruction caused by bronchospasm
What is an adverse effect caused from excessive use of the inhalant medication
paradoxical bronchospasm
What are some adverse effects of Beta2?
nausea, vomiting, restlessness, tachycardia and increased respirations, nervousness, headache, palpitations, and hyperglycemia
What are the 4 contraindications/warning/cautions of Beta2 agonist?
cardiac arrythmias, narrow angle glaucoma, beta blocker use (blocks all betas including beta2 which inhibits effects), caution for pts with diabetes mellitus (can increase serum blood glucose)
Muscarine Antagonist type and action
anticholinergic. antagonizes acetylcholine receptors producing bronchodilation
Use of muscarine antagonists (2)
symptomatic relief or prevention of bronchial asthma and management of COPD
Adverse effects of anticholinergics
drowsiness/sedation/flushed face, blurred vision/mydriasis, urinary retention, confusion/delirium, hallucinations, increased temp/HR, dry mouth
What are the contraindications/warning/caution of muscarinic antagonists
peptic ulcer, seizure, arrhythmias, hyperthyroid, older than 60, pregnancy class c (pros outweigh cons)
What does Leukotriene do?
Broncho constrictive substance released by the body during inflammation. Antagonist results in bronchodilation
What does a Mast Cell Stabilizer do?
Inhibit the release of substances that cause bronchoconstriction and inflammation from the mast cells in respiratory tract
What are the two uses for Leukotriene Antagonist and Mast Cell Stabilizers
Treatment of Asthma or COPD
What are the adverse effects of Leukotriene Antagonist and Mast Cell Stabilizers
Headache, dizziness, unpleasant taste, and fatigue
What are some contraindications/warnings/cautions for Leukotriene Antagonist and Mast Cell Stabilizers?
Acute asthma/bronchospasms, aspirin sensitive asthmatics
What action do inhaled corticosteroids have?
produce profound and varied metabolic effect, modify the normal immune response, and suppress inflammation
