What is a fungus? What is a fungal infection in a human called? (starts with m)
colorless plan that lacks chlorophyll. Mycotic infection which can range from superficial to systemic
What are the two types of Antifungal class drugs based off of their mechanism of action?
Fungicidal or fungistatic
What are some examples of why you would use an antifungal?
Superficial infection, tinea pedis, tinea cruris, tinea corporis, onychomycosis (nail), cutaneous, GI, vaginal, deep mycotic (i.e. lungs)
What is an adverse effect of topical antifungals?
local reaction (itching or burning)
What is an adverse effect of Ketoconazole? A contraindication?
hepatoxicity (discontinue immediately), must have periodic LFTs. Contra: when antacids or histamine antagonists (absorption of Ketoconazole is impaired)
Examples of topical antifungals (2) and systemic (3)
T: Clotrimazole, tolnaftate
S: Ketoconazole, Fluconazole (diflucan), Terbinafine (lamisil)
