Sleep apnea definition
Repeated episodes of cessation of breathing during sleep, followed by blood oxygen desaturation and arousal from sleep to restart breathing
OSA is characterized by what?
Upper airway collapse and obstruction, multiple episodes of airway closure and cessation of breathing per hour, multiple awakenings and arousals per hour
OSA is associated with what complications?
Car accidents, depression, cancer risk, stroke, CVD and cerebrovascular morbidity and mortality, treatment-resistant HTN
Nonpharm treatment options for OSA
Oral appliance therapy to push the lower jaw forward, CPAP, weight management
What kinds of meds should you avoid while you have OSA?
CNS DEPRESSANTS AND MEDS THAT CAUSE WEIGHT GAIN
If warranted, what can also be given for OSA treatment?
A medication for excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS)
