Crust
Thickened, dried out exudate.
Fissure
Linear crack with abrupt edges, opening is quite deep down (athletes foot)
Scale
Compact flakes of skin from shedding of dead keratin cells
Erosion
Scooped out, shallow depression, superficial, heals without scar tissue because doesn’t extend into dermis.
Ulcer
Deeper depression, into dermis. Irregular shape, may bleed, leaves scar when healing.
Excoriation
Self inflicted abrasion, superficial, ex. Scratches from intense itching.
Scar
Connective tissue that replaces normal tissue after skin is repaired.
Atrophic scar
Depression if skin level as a result of tissue loss (striae)
Lichenification
Thickening of skin, tightly packed applies, from prolonged intense scratching. Looks like moss.
Keloid
Hypertrophic scar, elevated, extended, elevation of skin level by excess scar tissue
