Macule
Colour change only, flat, < 1cm diameter.
Patch
Macule > 1cm diameter
Papule
Solid, elevated, < 1cm, superficial thickening of dermis. Ex. Nevus/mole
Plaque
Surface elevation > 1cm, plateau like (psoriasis)
Nodule
Solid, elevated, >1cm, differs from plaque because goes deeper into dermis, more rigid.
Wheal
Superficial, raised, transient and reddish, slightly irregular shape because of edema. Ex. Mosquito bite, allergic reaction.
Tumour
Larger than a few cm, deeper into dermis, benign or malignant.
Urticaria
Wheals that come together to form an extensive reaction, hives.
Vesicle
Aka blister, elevated cavity containing fluid up to 1cm
Bulla
Ex. Friction blister, greater than 1cm, superficial, thin walled, ruptures easily.
Pustule
Cavity filled with pus, not clear liquid
Cyst
Fluid filled, goes deep into skin, tensely elevated skin
