Skeletal System Flashcards
What are the 5 functions of the skeletal system?
- framework that provides support for our weight
- allows articulation
- protects vital organs
- produces red blood cells
- acts as storage for minerals and fats
What are the 5 types of bones?
- Long bone
- Flat bone
- Short bone
- Irregular bone
- Sesamoid bone
What does the long bone do? + example
- support weight and allow movement
- e.g. femur
What does the flat bone do? + example
- protects internal organs
- e.g. sternum
What does the short bone do? + example
- provide stability and some movement
- e.g. intermediate, lateral, medial cureiform
What does the irregular bone do? + example
- variable nature helps to protect different structures
- e.g. vertebra
What does the sesamoid bone do? + example
- protects tendons
- e.g. patella
What is the Axial Skeleton?
consists of the bones that lie around the central axis of the body
What is the Appendicular Skeleton?
the rest of the bones that attach to the axial skeleton
What is the structure of the axial skeleton?
- skull, vertebral column (spine), ribs, sternum (breatsbone)
What is the function of the axial skeleton?
- support for posture
- protection for central nervous system and thoracic organs
What is the structure of the appendicular skeleton?
- upper and lower limbs (arms and legs), pectoral girdle (shoulder), pelvis girdle (hip)
What is the function of the appendicular skeleton?
two girdles allow for articulation of the limbs with the axial skeleton
