Blood groups and Transfusion Flashcards
What antigens and antibodies are in the plasma, and red blood cells of blood group A?
- A antigens on the red blood cells
- anti B antibodies in the plasma
What antigens and antibodies are in the plasma, and red blood cells of blood group B?
- B antigens on the red blood cells
- anti A antibodies in the plasma
What antigens and antibodies are in the plasma, and red blood cells of blood group AB?
- A and B antigens on the red blood cells
- no antibodies
What antigens and antibodies are in the plasma, and red blood cells of blood group O?
- no antigens
- both anti A and anti B antibodies
What does it mean when someone is RhD positive and RhD negative?
- RhD postive = RhD antigen is present in your blood
- RhD negative = RhD antigen is not present
Why is it important to match blood groups to the donor and the recipient?
mixing incompatible blood types can cause erythrocytes to clump (agglutinate) and disintegrate
What is a whole blood transfusion?
- blood taken from donor + chemical added to prevent clotting
What is a red cell concentrate blood transfusion? What is its use?
- only erythrocytes transferred
- for patients suffering heart disease or anaemia
What is a platelet concentrated blood transfusion? what is its use?
- only platelets transferred
- patients with abnormal amount of platelets
What is a cryoprecipitate blood transfusion? what is its use?
- freezing plasma and thawing it slowly
- contains substances for clotting
- for patients with haemophilia
What is an immunoglobin blood transfusion? what is its use?
- group of proteins that act as antibodies
- for people with no immunity
What is a autologous blood transfusion? what is its use?
- blood taken out before surgery and put back in after to avoid disease
