Effects of ageing on the Musculoskeletal System Flashcards
1
Q
Why do bones deteriorate?
A
- our bone mass continues to grow until around the age of 30
- bones are living tissue
- bone density starts to deteriorate because of loss of calcium and other minerals
- this deterioration then leads to conditions that inhibit primary functions of our bones
2
Q
What is osteoporosis?
A
- loss of bone mass that leads to a sufficient impairment of normal bone function
- new bone tissue cannot keep up with old bone tissue deterioration
- decreased bone mass = more fractures
3
Q
What bones are most likely effected by osteoporosis?
A
vertebrae, ribs, pelvis, wrist and upper arm
4
Q
Lifestyle factors of osteoporosis?
A
- quit smoking (affects the body’s ability to absorb calcium)

- exercise
6
Q
What is the treatment of osteoporosis?
A
- medication
- weight bearing exercise
7

cannot be prevented
11

- no known cure
- medication to relieve pain
- physiotherapy for strength
- surgery for bone alignment or joint replacement
