Musculoskeletal System Structure Flashcards
What is the musculoskeletal system?
comprised of the skeletal and muscular system that work together to support and move the body
What are the 4 basic types of tissue?
- epithelial
- connective
- nervous
- muscular
What are the 3 types of tissue?
- skeletal
- smooth
- cardiac
What are the properties muscles possess
- extensibility = the ability to be stretched
- elasticity = the ability to return to its original length after being stretched
What is movement?
muscle contraction + extensibility + elasticity = movement
What is the structure of muscle fibres?
- elongated cylinders that contain many nuclei surrounded by a thin, transparent membrane called the sarcolemma
- hundreds of thousands of myofibrils are contained in a muscle fibre
- sarcoplasmic reticulum surrounds each muscle fibre
- each myofibril is made up of smaller microfilaments
What are the 2 types of microfilaments? and what are they composed of?
- Thick myofilaments = composed of mainly myosin protein
- thin myofilaments = composed of mainly actin protein
Where is skeletal muscle located?
attached to bones
Where is smooth muscle located?
internal organs
Where is cardiac muscle located?
the heart
What is the control and function of skeletal muscle?
- voluntary control
- helps move body (e.g. walking, running)
- maintaining body temperature
- store nutrients
What is the control and function of smooth muscle?
- involuntary control
- move internal organs
- maintain blood pressure and flow
What is the control and function of cardiac muscle?
- involuntary control
- push blood from heart into the blood vessels
