Excretory System Flashcards
what are the purpose of the excretory system?
chem processes in body produce more than the desired product your body needs
what is excretion?
the removal of waste from metabolism (metabolic waste) in the body
what are the organs involved in the excretory system?
lungs, sweat glands, alimentary canal, liver, and kidneys
what are the organs involved in the excretory system?
lungs, sweat glands, alimentary canal, liver, and kidneys
what is the function of the lungs in the excretory system?
removal of CO2
what is the function of the sweat glands in the excretory system?
secrete water, salts, urea and lactic acid
what is the function of the alimentary canal in the excretory system?
passes out bile pigments (by product of breakdown of haemoglobin)
what is the function of the liver in the excretory system?
processes many substances so that they can be excreted (deamination)
what is the function of the kidneys in the excretory system?
- responsible for the maintenance of constant concentration of materials in the body fluids
- removes waste such as: urea, uric acid, creatinine, toxins, salts and water
What is deamination?
breakdown of proteins into amino acids
How does deamination work?
-the liver breaks down amino acids by getting rid of an amino group (NH2) by reacting with (O2) to produce ammonia and carbs
- liver converts ammonia into urea with the addition of CO2
Deamination equations:
- amino acid + oxygen -(enzymes)-> carbohydrates + ammonia(NH3)
- energy + CO2 + ammonia –> urea + H2O
What is the purpose of the skin in the excretory system?
- a duct carries sweat to the surface of the skin or to a hair follicle
- cells surrounding the galnds contract and squeeze sweat containing NaCl, lactic acid, and urea to the skin surface
