Joints and movement Flashcards
1
Q
What are the 3 types of joints?
A
- fibrous (fixed) joints
- cartilaginous (slightly moveable) joints
- synovial (freely moveable) joints
2
Q
How are joints classified?
A
- range of movement (functional)
- type of connective tissue (structural)
3
Q
What is the functional classification of fibrous joints?
A
no movement
4
Q
What is the functional classification of cartilaginous?
A
slight movement
5
Q
What is the functional classification of synovial?
A
a lot of movement
6
Q
What is the structural class of fibrous joints? + examples
A
- fibrous connective tissue
- joints are held in place therefore very strong
- bone will break first before joint gives way
- e.g. sutures, gomphosis
7
Q
What is the structural class of cartilaginous joints? + examples
A
- hyaline cartilage of fibrocartilage tissue hold joint in place
- weaker than fibrous, but more movement
- e.g. joints between vertebrae, joints between 2 pelvic bones
8
Q
What is the structural class of synovial joints? + examples
A
- loose connective tissue
- e.g. shoulder, elbow, wrist, fingers, hip, knee, ankle, toes
