What are Kidney Stones?
formation of solid crystals that build up inside the kidneys due to urine being too concentrated
What causes kidney stones?
insufficient fluid in the diet
How to treat kidney stones?
- small crystals can pass down the ureter and out of the body through the urethra (painful)
- larger stones can get stuck and have to be surgically removed
What is kidney failure?
A condition when the kidney loses its ability to remove waste and balance fluid
Pathophysiology of kidney failure?
- decrease blood protein levels and fluid accumulate in the tissue (swelling)
- proteins and red blood cells can be filtered out of the glomerulus and be in urine
Treatment of kidney failure:
transplant and dialysis
lifestyle measures of kidney failure:
- regulate weight
- regulate diet
- no smoking
- moderate alcohol consumption
- prevent performance enhancing drugs
What is liver disease?
any conditions that damages the liver and prevents from functioning well
What things hinder the proper function of the liver?
infections, autoimmune disease, genetic disorder, cancer and lifestyle factors such as excessive alcohol consumption and fatty diets
Symptoms of liver disease?
- jaundice (yellow tinge)
- abdominal pain
- swelling in legs and feet
- nausea and vomiting
- dark faeces
