Skeletal muscle (dave's notes) Flashcards
At what angle to muscle fibres is their direction of pull?
Parallel or oblique
How do bone markings differ between tendinous attachments and mixed or fleshy attachments?
Pure tendons leave smooth bone markings while mixed or fleshy tissue leaves a rough finish.
Describe the origin of flat muscles over flat bones
In flat muscles extending over flat bones the origin does not extend to the edge of the bone
Give four types of skeletal muscle movement or action
Prime mover
Antagonist
Fixator
Synergist
How do arteries and veins enter skeletal muscle?
With the motor nerve
Where does skeletal muscle lymph drain to?
Regional nodes
What accompanies somatic nerve motor branches?
Afferent and autonomic fibres
Where do efferent skeletal muscle nerves arise?
From large alpha anterior horn cells and small gamma cells
What is notable about some nerves piercing flat muscles of the body wall?
Flat muscles of the body wall are perforated by cutaneous nerves that do not necessarily supply the muscle
How do nerves perforating limb muscles differ from muscles of the body wall?
In the limbs when a nerve pierces a muscle it supplies the muscle
What supplies all muscles in a limb?
A limb plexus
What supplies flexor muscles?
A limb plexus - anterior divisions
What supplies extensor muscles?
A limb plexus - posterior divisions
What percentage of limb muscle innervation is afferent? What afferent information is transmitted?
Approximately 40%, innervating spindles for proprioception
What is notable about nerves supplying ocular and facial muscles?
Their nerves contain no sensory fibres - proprioception is by the trigeminal nerve.
