Membranes and lymphoid tissue (dave's notes) Flashcards
Define: Mucous membrane
The lining of an internal body surface that communicates with the exterior
What are the constituents of a mucous membrane?
Epithelium, connective tissue (lamina propria), smooth muscle (muscularis mucosa)
Define: Serous membrane
The lining of a closed body cavity (pericardial, pleural, peritoneal) consisting of connective tissue covered by a single layer of flattened mesothelial cells.
What lubricates the two layers serous membranes?
Lymph
What is the nerve supply to the parietal layer of a serous membrane? What about the visceral layer?
Spinal nerves to the parietal layer. Visceral layer has no nerve supply
List the organs of lymphoid tissue
Thymus, lymph nodes, tonsils, spleen - all of which have a connective tissue framework to support cellular elements.
Where are isolated lymphoid follicles found?
In the mucosa and submucosa
