Raphes, cartilage and muscle (dave's notes) Flashcards
Define a raphe
An interdigitation of short tendinous ends of fibres of flat muscle sheets
Give four examples of raphes
Pterygomandibular, mylohyoid, pharyngeal, anococcygeal
List three types of cartilage
Hyaline cartilage
Fibrocartilage
Elastic cartilage
Where is hyaline cartilage found?
Covering the articular surface of typical synovial joints and growth plates
Give two properties of hyaline cartilage
Avascular
Capable of small amounts of deformation. Repair is by fibrous tissue
What is fibrocartilage?
Fibrocartilage resembles tendons of ligaments but has small islands of cartilage
Give five example of fibrocartilage
Intervertebral discs Labrum Menisci Clavicle Mandible
Give two properties of fibrocartilage
Tends to calcify in old age
Has an ordinary blood supply
Give two properties of elastic cartilage
Is easily distorted
Never calcifies or ossifies
Give three examples of elastic cartilage
Pinna
Auditory tube
Epiglottis
List three types of muscle
Skeletal
Cardiac
Visceral
Define skeletal muscle
Striated, multinucleate, non-branching
What types of fibres does skeletal muscle contain? What are the properties of these fibres?
Red fibres - slow and aerobic
White fibres - fast anaerobic
What does each muscle fibre receive?
A motor nerve fibre
What is skeletal muscle bound by?
Condensed connective tissue
