Deep fascia, ligaments and tendons (dave's notes) Flashcards
What is the deep fascia? How does it vary?
The deep fascia is a membrane wrapping, varying widely in thickness, being thick over non-expansile parts and thin over expansile parts
Why does the deep fascia never pass freely over bone?
Because it blends with the periosteum
What connects the deep fascia to the skin?
Fibrous strands
What is the nerve supply to the deep fascia?
The same as that of the overlying skin
What are the two types of ligaments?
White ligaments and yellow ligaments
What are white ligaments?
non-elastic connective tissue with a lot of collagen
What are yellow ligaments?
Ligaments composed of elastic tissue
Give three examples of yellow ligaments
The ligamentum flavum between the laminae of the vertebrae
Capsular ligaments
Auditory ossicles
When may white ligaments elongate?
Under prolonged strain
Define tendons
These are similar in composition to ligaments but are attached to muscle
What is the blood supply to a tendon?
From an anastomosis between muscle belly and periosteum
What do tendons in a region of friction have?
A synovial sheath
