First (mandibular) branchial arch (dave's notes) Flashcards
How is the first branchial arch formed
The right and left sides fuse in the midline
Chondrification in the mesoderm produces what?
Meckel’s cartilage
What appears on each side of the first branchial arch?
Cranial bumps, ??forming the maxillary process, which grow together meeting each other and the nasal processes to become the upper jaw and palate
What are the ecto and endo derivatives of the first branchial arch?
Mucous membranes and glands (in the anterior 2/3rds of the tongue).
What are taste buds supplied by?
The chord tympani branch of the fascial nerve (is the pre-cleft branch of the facial nerve)
What are the meso derivatives of the first branchial arch?
The muscles of mastication, mylohyoid, anterior digastric, tensors palate and tympani (n. mandibular nerve)
What is the artery of the first branchial arch?
The first aortic arch, part of which persists as the maxillary artery.
What is significant about the maxillary branch of the trigeminal nerve?
Note that the maxillary process has its own sensory nerve - the maxillary branch of the trigeminal nerve.
