Bone (dave's notes) Flashcards
Bone is extremely vascular due to minute channels. What are these channels called?
Cannaliculi to Haversian canals, and Volkman channels running at right angles.
What types of bone exist
Compact and cancellous
What is stored in bone? What happens to this supply with age?
Marrow, decreasing supply with age
What is the role of periosteum?
Essential to the nutrition of bone and is osteogenic
What forms joint capsules?
Periosteum is reflected at articular surfaces to form the capsule of the joint
Periosteum is very sensitive. What is its nerve supply?
Superficial parts are supplied by nerves of overlying skin and deeper parts are supplied by local nerves.
How do bones receive their arterial supply?
A nutrient artery supplies the marrow, with the remainder of bone being supplied through periosteum
What types of ossification exist?
Intramembranous and endochondral ossification
Give three examples of intramembranous ossification
Skull vault, face, clavicle
Give an example of endochondral ossification
Long bones
Define intramembranous ossification
Bone is laid down in fibrous tissue with no cartilage precursor
Define endochondral ossification
Pre-existing hyaline cartilage is gradually destroyed and replaced by bone
What is the primary centre of ossification?
The site where bone first forms
Where is the primary centre of ossification in long bones, and at what intrauterine week does this being?
The middle of the shaft, 8th week of intrauterine life
What is secondary cartilage?
Cartilage that develops in membrane growing bones providing a cartilage surface for membrane bones that would otherwise not have any cartilage ends.
