Shaping Flashcards
Sahping definition
Differential reinforcement of successive approximations until the target behvaior (‘terminal behvaior’) is reached
- advance to next step after current one is mastered
Differential reinforcement
One particular behavior is reinforced and all other behvaiors are NOT
Successive approximations
Each consequtive behvaior more closely resembles the target behvaior in a series of shaping steps
If shaping steps advance too quickly:
Behavior deteriorates
- returns to previous approximation
If shaping steps too slowly:
Gaps are too small
- time consuming and expensive
Quantitative shaping
Setting criteria to increase/decrease a dimension of specific behavior
- intensity, frequency, latency, duration
Qualitative (Topographic) shaping
Degree to which successive behvaiors resemble the target behvaior
1. starting behvaior
2. intermediate behvaior
3. target behvaior
Applications of shaping
- exercise
- physical therapy
- classroom management
- animal training
MO
MOTIVATING OPERATIONS
- antecedent events that (temporarily) alter the effectiveness of reinforcement and effects behavior
- ex: social, physiological, environmental
EO
ESTABLISHING OPERATIONS
- establishes/increases the effectiveness of reinforcement
AO
ABOLISHING OPERATIONS
- decreases the effectiveness of reinforcement
