Bad Habits
Repetative or stereotyped behaviors (gestural/verbal) that serve no useful purpose and tend to be an annoyance
- occurs automatically/subconsciously
- ex: motor tics, stuttering, nervous habits
The Straitum
Of the basal ganglia
- associated with voluntary motor control and procedural learning
What qualitifes as a Habit Disorder?
LOOSLY characterized as being:
- distressing to the person
- high frequency/intensity causing person to seek treatment
- adverse physical/social effects on person (ex: pain, embarrassment)
Nervous Habits
Repetitive behaviors that occur when a person is nervous
- AKA: Body-Focused Repetitive Behaviors (BFRB)
- associated with perfectionism/OCD
Motor Tics
Repetitive, jerking movements of the body
Vocal Tics
Repetitive nonspeech vocal sounds that DO NOT convey information/social function
- ex: excessive throat-clearing
Tourette’s Syndrome
Criteria: Multiple motor tics and AT LEAST 1 vocal tic
- caused by genetic & environmental factors
- often combined with ADHD or OCD
Stuttering
Speech delay where a person repeats syllables or words
- therapy/treatment is effective & avalible
Habit Reversal Procedures
An approach for decreasing a behavior that does NOT concentrate on reinforcers and is implemented by the target person (under supervision)
Awareness Training (HRT)
Person is taught to DESCRIBE the problem behavior then watch for it & notice when it occurs
Competing Response Training (HRT)
Person is taught to PREFORM a behavior that is INCOMPATIBLE with target behavior
- Mutually exclusive
Social Support
Family members/friends who are close to target person
- points out when behavior occurs
- prompt the use of competing/alternative behavior
- reinforce desirable behavior
Motivation Strategy
Behavior analyst determines antecedents, situations, & consequences of target behavior
- review effects of behavior (ex: physical pain)
How to apply HRT
- Identify/discribe problem behavior
- Learns/practices incompatible behavior
- Review adverse effects of disorder
