Sexual Reproduction Flashcards
do you need two parents for sexual reproduction
no because you just need two sexes and a single parent can be both (hermaphrodite)
what is sexual reproduction
a cell from one source (sperm cell) fuses with a cell from another source (egg cell) to produce a zygote
what is the point of sexual reproduction
-produce variation to prevent dying out
how is variation produced
by sex because of how the DNA is packaged
how do organisms except bacteria package their DNA in chromosomes
in homologous pairs
what is a homologous pair
chromosomes are similar size shape and information they contain but they are not identical
what happens when a male and female have sex
- male randomly donates one member of each homologous pair (packaged in sperm) and the female does the same (packaged in the egg cell)
- parents give “half of itself” to the offspring
what is the result of sex
an individual who resembles either parent but is unique
what happens when the chromosomes get passed on randomly
a unique combination of chromosomes whenever sperm and egg meet
how do we make sperm or egg cells that only have one member of each homologous pair
by a special type of cell division called meiosis or reduction division
what is meiosis
- similar to mitosis except the cell divides twice instead if once
- you get four daughter cells, each with half the normal chromosome number
what are cells called that have the usual number of chromosomes
- diploid
- in humans sperm/egg cells have 23 chromosomes (haploid)
- all other cells have 46 chromosomes (diploid)
