Reproductive System Flashcards
sperm structure
head -haploid nucleus -acrosome neck -contains mitochondria to supply ATP for movement flagellum -locomotion
hepatitis
hep a
-water with fecal material
-oral/anal contact
hep b
-sexual contact with infected body fluids/blood
hep c
-blood to blood contact with infected needles/syringes
vulva parts
- clitoris
- labia majora
- labia minora
fructose
-after ejaculation the mitochondria process fructose in seminal fluid to provide energy
fertilization site
Fallopian tubes
viral stis
- HIV/AIDS
- hepatitis a/b/c
- genital herpes
- HPV
endometrium
- lining of the uterus
- richly supplies with blood vessels to provide nutrients for the fetus
acrosome
- cap like structure covering head
- stores enzymes that are needed to penetrate the protective layer surrounding a female egg
- needed in order to fertilize
HIV
- attacks helper T cells
- as helper T cells decrease the infected person because more vulnerable to disease
secondary sexual characteristics
distinct set of features that aren’t directly related to reproductive system
male
-facial/body hair -deeper voice -broader shoulders
females
-minimal facial/body hair -prominent breasts -higher voice
amniotic fluid
watery fluid in the amnion that:
- cushions embryo against jolts
- controls fetal body temp
- prevents amnion from sticking to embryo/fetus
chorionic villi
-enlarge on the side of the chorion which implants into the endometrium; these villi become part of the placenta
chlamydia
- caused by the bacterium chlamydia trachomatis
- discharge from penis/vagina
- burning pain when urinating
- fever
- asymptomatic
pid
- if chlamydia isn’t detected it can spread to cervix and fallopian tubes and lead to pid
- very painful and can result in a build up of scar tissue in the fallopian tubes
- tubes become blocked causing infertility
- infection in cervix can cause open sores that increase risk of HIV
- baby who comes in contact with it can develop infections of the eyes and respiratory tract
ordering male structures
- seminiferous tubules
- epididymis
- vas deferens
- ejaculatory duct
