Asexual Reproduction Flashcards
0
Q
binary fission
A
- used by bacteria and protists
- existing creature splits equally into two new individuals
- protists and anemones are binary fission because they have nuclei in their cells, must undergo mitosis as part of this process
1
Q
what is asexual reproduction
A
- reproduction without sex
- new individuals become identical to their parent
2
Q
budding
A
- used by yeast (single celled fungi) and some simply animals (hydra)
- similar to binary fission, but the parent organism forms a miniature copy of itself
- this bud remains attached to the parent until it is big enough to detach and become independent
3
Q
fragmentation/vegetative propagation
A
- in plants, growth occurs in areas called meristems, regions of unspecialized, rapidly growing cells
- so if a piece breaks of a plant and contains meristem, that piece may become a new individual
- that is vegetative propagation
- fungi lack meristem but reproduce in a similar way called fragmentation
4
Q
sporulation
A
- many organisms use spores to reproduce
- a spore is a tiny cell copy that can become a new individual
- spores are highly resilient and are often produced when living conditions are bad
- when living conditions improve each spore can become a new individual
- there are also sexual spores
5
Q
regeneration
A
- this is an animal ability
- re growth of lost body parts
- planarian will produce two new worms if it is cut in two
- sea stars are good at regenerating
- regeneration is a type of asexual reproduction because it can produce new individuals
- this does not mean that an animal that has regenerated has reproduced
