Mixtures Flashcards
The particles in a homogeneous mixture are not chemically bonded, so how do you break them down?
they can be physically broken down
What are mixtures made up of?
two or more types of particles
What type of mixtures are there?
homogenous and heterogeneous
What mixture do we have if it consists of true particles (atoms or molecules)?
homogenous mixture
What is in a solution?
one substance (the solute) is dissolved another (the solvent)
What happens when something dissolves?
it is separated into its smallest possible pieces
What is another name for homogenous mixtures?
solutions
What does a homogenous mixture look like?
it looks the same all over, you cannot see the different parts of the mixture
Give a few examples of solutions?
carbonated drinks- gas in water
air- gas in gas
alcoholic drinks- liquid in liquid
alloys- solid dissolved in solid
If our mixture has things that are not true particles, what mixture do we have?
heterogeneous
In a heterogeneous mixture there is no dissolving, so what kind of ‘bits’ are they made up of?
the bits are larger than atoms or molecules
What is a suspension?
bits are dispersed in a liquid
Why are the bits in a suspension dispersed in a liquid?
the water is moving
How do the bits in a suspension settle?
they settle due to gravity
Give a few examples of suspensions
muddy water
pulpy orange juice
snow globes
