Current Electricity Flashcards
0
Q
what is current electricity
A
moving electricity (flow of electrons)
1
Q
electricity is highly controlled by paths called
A
circuits
2
Q
source of electrical energy
A
- pushes electrons through circuit
- includes generators, solar panels, cells/batteries
- work by separating charge
3
Q
load
A
- converts electrical energy into the energy we want
- any appliance or electrical device is a type of load
4
Q
Control device
A
- turns circuit on or off
- circuit will work without a switch
5
Q
connections
A
wires that connect all the components together
6
Q
types of circuits
A
- parallel
- series
- complex
7
Q
series circuit
A
one path for electricity flow
8
Q
parallel circuit
A
multiple paths for electricity flow
9
Q
complex circuit
A
combination of series and parallel
10
Q
current
A
- movement of charges
- measured in AMPS
- the more charges moving past a certain point per second, the higher the current
11
Q
types of currents
A
- alternating current switches directions a few times per second
- direct current travel in one direction only
12
Q
voltage
A
- also called potential difference
- measure how much charge separation there is
- the more separation the more potential to do work
- measured in volts
13
Q
resistance
A
- electrons slow down when they travel through a wire
- the slow down is called resistance
- measured in OHMS
- determined by thickness (less resistance) and length (more resistance)
14
Q
power
A
- measure how much electrical energy is concerted to useful energy overtime
- measured in watts
- the more electrical energy converted to useful stuff, the more efficient the machine
- in any energy conversion some energy will be lost as heat
