Human/Male Reproduction Flashcards
when does the male acquire the ability to produce offspring
when he reaches sexual maturity
what is the most importance difference between males and females
- gonads, reproductive organs that produce gametes (sperm/egg)
- males testicles
- females ovaries
when does he reach sexual maturity
- during puberty
- starts early to mid teens
when does puberty start
- when the brain releases more follicle stimulating hormone (FSH)
- tells the testes to produce more testosterone
what secondary characteristics is testosterone responsible for producing
- more (facial) hair
- broader shoulders
- deeper voice
how are sperm produced
- through meiosis
- in a part of the testes called the seminiferous tubules (350-500 million per day)
- then go to the epididymis for storage
seminiferous tubules + epididymis = ??
testicle
where are testes are held outside the body
- in the scrotum
- to keep them slightly cool for healthy sperm production
where do the sperm go through when they leave the body
- it goes through a long tube called the vas deferns
- as the sperm travel through the vas deferns they are mixed with fluids from the PROSTATE and SEMINAL VESICAL GLANDS
- the fluids help the sperm reach the egg
sperm + secretions = ??
semen
where does the vas deferns lead to
the urethra which runs though the penis to the outside
what does the urethra eject
- semen and urine
- ejection of semen is ejaculation
- small valve prevents urine and semen from being in the urethra at the same time
what also happens to a male during puberty
his testes start producing sperm for his whole life
