Sensory-motor integration Flashcards
What is sensory-motor integration?
Sensory info is needed for correct motor actions, so sensory info is used and integrated with motor circuit commands
What senses are involved in sensorimotor integration?
Hearing, vision, somatosensation (pain, cold, warm), proprioception, vestibular
Smell and taste are less obvious
What senses are important for balance?
Proprioception, mechanoception, vestibular sensation and vision
How are inputs from the skin involved in locomotion?
Allow stepping to adjust for unexpected obstacles (e.g., stumbling-correction)
What pathways are involved in sensory generated modifications of locomotion?
- Dorsal spinocerebellar tracts: sense the movement-related iput - afference copy
- Ventral sponocerebellar tracts: sense the locomotor network activity - efference copy
What region are involved in stepping over an obstacle?
The motor cortex
What region of the brain are involved in planning volutary gait modifications from visual feedback?
The posterior parietal cortex
How does the superior colliculus play a role in sensorimotor integration?
It’s a node for visio-motor integration
What does visual signals coming from above going to the medial superior colliculus result in?
Fear: freezing or avoidance
What does visual signals coming from below going to the lateral superior colliculus result in?
Approach and orienting
