Sensory Alterations Flashcards
what are our SENSES?
Sight/visual
Hearing/auditory
Touch/tactile
Smell/olfactory
Taste/gustatory
Position and motion/kinestheti
importance of SENSES
allows to GIVE MEANING & ORDER to events that happen/any change can alter perception/comms. drastically
stereognosis
sense that ALLOWS a person to RECOGNIZE the SIZE, SHAPE, & TEXTURE of an OBJECT
reception
the STIMULATION of a RECEPTOR such as light, touch, or sound
perception
integration & interpretation of stimuli
reaction
only the most important stimuli will elicit a reaction
sensory deficits
where there is a DEFICIT in the NORMAL FUNCTION of sensory reception & perception
sensory deprivation
having INADEQUATE QUALITY or QUANTITY of stimulation
ex. having reduced input
ex. elimination of patterns
ex. restrictive environments
sensory overload
having RECEPTION of MULTIPLE SENSORY STIMULI
what are the FACTORS that INFLUENCE SENSORY FXN?
- age; older adults & neonates
- meaningful stimuli
- amount of stimuli
- social interaction
- environmental factors; occupation
- cultural factors; ex. glaucoma/blindness - hispanic/african American pop.
what is important to assess?
- is this patient at risk?
- how is the patient’s mental status?
- physical assessment; how is their baseline? can they do self-care? do they understand the conversation?
- use of assistive devices? glasses? hearing aids?
- how do they communicate?
how can we PROMOTE HEALTH - sensory alterations?
- screening; screening tests for hearing & blindness
- preventive measures; proper equipment + goggles/immunizations
- assistive devices
- meaningful stimulation; massages, music
