semen and indices of quality workshop Flashcards

1
Q

state at least 2 methods for semen collection and their pros and cons

A

manual stimulation (AV) pro: replicates natural behaviour con: danger to handlers, requires teaser, shy (dont want to be watched doin it)
electro stimulation Pro: doesnt need to mount (older and injured animals), dont need a teaser (seasonal), higher probability of sample in untrained animal con: may need sedation, may not represent a normal ejaculate, more stressful, can only do so many times

Q

what parameters can be measured on/in collected semen collected in a pre breeding exam. also think how you could do these

A
  • volume
  • consistency
  • colour
  • smell
  • motility
  • morphology

Q

what physiological events and factors influence the production of spermatozoa

A
  • season (winter breeders produce less sperm in the summer –> testes smaller in summer)
  • testosterone
  • age
  • diet
  • FSH and LH

  • testosterone
