what is the urachus
A
- connects the fetal bladder to the allantois
- travels through the umbilical cord as the urachus
- enters the allantoic cavity when the umbilical cord passes through the allantoamniotic membrane
- The umbilical cord contains: 2x umbilical arteries, 2x umbilical veins (but fuse to a single vein within the amnion), urachus, yolk sac remnant, loose connective tissues.
- is patent (open) in quadrupeds, thus urine can flow into the allantoic cavity. In primates the urachus is not patent, thus the fetus urinates into the amniotic cavity.
