His theory seemed to imply that humans were on the same level as any other creature, while the church taught humans were created in a special way

Not to give a factual account of the origin of the world, that is the role of science. The creation stories in Genesis are a religious account explaining why the world came to be

The view that a sacred text is a factual account to be taken literally
What is the main point of contact between science and religion?
Both accept there is order and design in the universe. It is just too amazing to have happened by accident
