Sassen Flashcards
What was Saskia Sassen’s claim about the consequence of globalization?
That instead of more dispersal as was proposed and expected by other, earlier scholars we saw (a form of) more concentration
What two dynamics does the geography of globalism have?
Dynamic of dispersal and of concentration
What is the dynamic of dispersal?
Some processes are spread out to multiple, other locations
What is the dynamic of concentration?
Some cities have accummulated even higher concentrations of people and activities
What is the reason that certain cities are agglomerations of economies and highly innovative environments?
Not because of their size or status, but because of their role in the global network of cities (flows)
Sassen defines four forms of centrality in cities:
- CBD: central business district
- Center extends into metropolitan area in the form of a grid of nodes
- Trans-territorial center
- Centrality in electronic spaces
