Castells Flashcards
How does Castells define “space”?
Fundamental dimension that expresses (not reflects) urban society
Explain the Space of Places:
This is the geographical domain: landscape, cities, architecture
Explain the Space of Flows:
This is the virtual (not digital) domain: global exchanges/flows of information, money, goods, people, etc. moving around the world
Where do the two spaces interact?
At certain touch-points, most often cities
Give the contrast between the concepts of Sassen and Castells?
Sassen focuses on the power-concentration in certain cities and how it affects global flows.
Castells focuses on the power of the flows themselves and how it influences cities
What are the three axes Castells distinguishes in his approach to cities?
- Function: dynamic opposition between the electronic global and face-to-face local
- Meaning: complex relation between personal identity and shared identities
- Form: interaction between physical and digital space
