Placemaking and Placelessness Flashcards
What is placelessness?
A missing sense of place due to rapid urbanization at a global scale (cities planned for more capital instead of people). Effect: desolation and lack of human connectedness
What is the difference between “place” and “space”?
Place implies a stronger sense of physicality (more tangible).
Space is more abstract.
Place is also what people make of it/do with it/experience it
Explain place and materiality:
The built environment and the distribution of resources (facilities, public transport, social/physical infrastructure)
How does placemaking differ from top-down planning?
Placemaking starts from the street or eye-level. The starting point are the end users instead of the policy makers
Name the four critiques on placemaking:
- Placemaking became a trendy term/buzzword and was everywhere. Everything was considered placemaking
- Started to be used for wrong purposes (increase market value, attract high income groups, and excluded others)
- Sparked conflict of different visions in which the more powerful ones were those it was not meant for
- Dominant focus on localised, micro-scale efforts. Questionable effectiveness for larger issues
Why is placemaking still useful?
- Clear expression of discontent with current urban development and planning practices
- Good intentions
- Emphasizing combination of social and spatial elements
- Promoting interdisciplinary approach
What are the two types of encounters?
Fleeting: very short with superficial interaction
Meaningful: more deep, meaningful interaction with people you normally don’t meet
Name Lynch’s 5 elements that determine a city’s “image”:
Paths: defined by routes people move along
Nodes: strategic points where people meet
Landmarks: objects people use as reference points
Edges: people clearly recognize as transition zones and boundaries
Districts: people recognize as distinct areas, sectors, quarters with distinct character
