Parotid gland salivary duct
Crosses masseter, pierces the buccinator and drains adjacent to the 2nd upper molar tooth (stensen duct)
Location of parotid gland
Overlying mandibular ramus
Anterior and inferior to ear
Structure passing through the parotid gland
- Facial nerve - temporal, zygomatic, buccal, mandibular, cervical)
- External carotid artery
- Retromandibular vein
- Auricotemporal nerve
Relations of parotid gland
Anterior - masseter, medial pterygoid, superficial temporal and maxillary artery, facial nerve, stylomandibular ligament
Posterior - posterior belly of digastric, SCM, internal carotid, mastoid process, styloid process
Arterial supply of parotid
External carotid
Venous drainage of parotid gland
Retromandibular vein
Lymphatic drainage of parotid gland
Deep cervical nodes
Innervation of parotid
Parasympathetic - sacretomotor
Sympathetic - superior cervical ganglion
Sensory - greater Auricular nerve
