How many lobes does the mammary gland have?
15-20
They open via ducts in to nipples
Where does the breast extend from?
- Breast extends from 2nd rib to 6th rib
2. From lateral margin of sternum to mid axillary line
What does the medial 2/3rd of breast lie on
Pectoralis major
What does the lateral 1/3rd of breast lie on?
Serratus anterior
What does the inferior aspect of the breast lie on?
Rests on upper aspect of external oblique and rectus sheath
What are the ducts of each lobule lines by?
Columnar or cuboidal epithelium
What are the short excretory ducts lines by?
Squamous epithelium
What is the arterial supply of the lateral breast ?
- Lateral thoracic (from axillary from subclavian)
- Thoracoacromial (from axillary from subclavian)
- Superior thoracic and subscapular to a lesser extent
- Lateral perforating branches of intercostal arteries
What is the blood supply of medial breast?
Internal thoracic (mammary) - from subclavian - perforating branches 1st to 4th intercostal space
Venous drainage of lateral breast
Thoracoacromial vein
Lateral thoracic vein - axillary vein - subclavian vein
Venous drainage of medial breast
Internal thoracic vein - subclavian vein
